Case Study: Cement

Survey-grade coal inventory at a Newberry, FL cement plant

Four permanently installed EOS2 LiDAR scanners measured an indoor coal stockpile during normal operations. Hyperion's mass estimate came within 0.55% of a certified third-party terrestrial survey.

The challenge

Verifying an indoor coal inventory without stopping the plant

A cement plant in Newberry, Florida needed to verify the accuracy of its indoor coal stockpile inventory. The measurement had to be precise, it could not disrupt operations, and it had to be validated against a trusted, independent standard.

Traditional methods were too slow and too intermittent to provide the daily insight the plant needed.

  • Precision. Coal is a high-value fuel, so small percentage errors are expensive.
  • No disruption. Measurement had to happen during normal operations.
  • Independent validation. Results had to hold up against a certified survey.

The solution

Fixed LiDAR scanners and automated processing

Altamus installed four EOS2 LiDAR scanners on the building's overhead trusses, above the coal pile.

Hyperion triggered a complete scan, composited the point clouds from all four scanners, filtered out noise and equipment, reconstructed the pile surface and calculated volume and mass. The full scan and processing took under 20 minutes, with no downtime and no one on the pile.

The result

0.55% variance against a certified terrestrial survey

The resulting mass estimate showed a 0.55% variance relative to a certified third-party terrestrial survey, giving the plant survey-grade confidence in its coal inventory.

Because the scanners are permanently installed, the plant can repeat that measurement on a schedule or on demand, turning a periodic survey into a daily source of inventory data for procurement, production planning and month-end reconciliation.
